The team from Mackey Mitchell Associates and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville epitomized the benefits of a design team truly partnering with a university and its students to cooperate and jointly discover solutions to whatever challenges they may face. The solution in this case — built primarily around a series of sliding walls and doors that allow students to modify community and personal space as needed — was unique and strong enough that the jury chose to award them a special “Compelling Commitment to Community” award. Their dazzling interactive presentation, along with their forward-thinking ideas, also earned them the People's Choice award from the audience.
