The future of collegiate housing is now.

The 21st Century Project began in 2006 with a summit of 100 higher education professionals who gathered to envision the future of collegiate housing. The conversation was lively and benefited greatly from the participants ranging from college presidents to students.

One year later, the first 21st Century Project Design Showcase competition called on architects, designers, students, and professionals to envision the individual student living unit (referred to as "the Home") using their own creativity as well as information from the summit report.

The second 21st Century Project Design Showcase competition built upon those designs and drew upon the same design principles of community, flexibility, sustainability, and technology. The submitted designs focused on ways these rooms can be grouped into halls, pods, and complete buildings; student communities that were referred to as the “Block” and “Neighborhood.”

The two design competitions generated truly innovative solutions filled with ideas of how residence halls can and should enhance the student experience. They showed that, eventually, halls that meet the description of the 21st Century Project must exist on every college and university campus. When they do, they will support a better educational experience for the students who are going to forge new directions as our leaders and global citizens.
