21st Century Project Prototype: The Village
21st Century Project Prototype: The Village
Application Process
- Institutions apply to be considered as a site in a two-stage selection process. The first stage requires information about their campus to be submitted.
- Once the institution(s) have been selected by the Planning Team, representatives from ACUHO-I work with the school(s) on summit arrangements. (See description of summit process on page 4.)
- Once the summits are completed and the appropriate criteria are determined by the summit stakeholders, the second stage begins with issuing the RFQ’s for "The Village" from design and construction professions (individuals or teams). Design professionals could design to one site, or multiple if more than one campus host is selected. Each institution, with the assistance of someone from the planning team, a former juror, and/or an ACUHO-I officer, would select a shortlist of design teams for each institution of not more than five teams per institution. The shortlisted firms will be asked to prepare a design presentation for each campus.
- Drawing submittal requirements for jury consideration will include:
a. A short narrative describing the innovative ways in which the design addresses defining concepts of the 21st Century Project (sustainability, technology, community, flexibility, and innovation).
b. Plans, sections, elevations, renderings, outline specification including systems narrative, diagrams, and any other graphic and/or physical tool to assist the jury in understanding the design intent.
c. All presentation material must fit on and be limited to four (4) 24” x 36” boards
- Each institution will arrange interviews with the shortlisted design teams. The institution, with the assistance of a 21st Century Project representative, will select the winning design.
- Institutions will submit the presentations to ACUHO-I for their use. A “The Village” design showcase can be arranged by the institution that would be open to the association.
a. ACUHO-I will assist in soliciting press coverage.
b. Designs and concepts will be developed by ACUHO-I for the 21st Century Project Web site and/or print publications.
- The institution will develop the project with the design team and utilize the 21st Century Project guidelines as a road map and criteria for the design process. A representative from ACUHO-I and the 21st Century Project will be available throughout the design process as a resource and will participate in key design presentations to offer additional insight and knowledge concerning the goals of the 21st Century Project.
- A report is required by the design team and institution to confirm and validate their project as a 21st Century Project. Comments made by the planners will need full consideration and resolution prior to acquiring the label “21st Century Project”.
- The constructed facility will be an incubator of new ideas for student housing and serve as a test case for ideas, technology, and innovation. Therefore, the facility will be made available to institutions and design professionals for tours, information gathering sessions, seminars, and case reports. Assessment of the project and its energy use, functions, occupancy, and trend development will be for a period of five years. This will be part of the final close out for the institution fulfilling the requirements of the initiative. During this assessment period, corporate sponsors with products appearing in the facility will be able to do their own product showcase and assessment.
